P3Dv6 with Orbx

Post by djw4250@gmail.com »

Has anyone figured out how to get Orbx working in P3Dv6?

Not yet. We'll have to wait and that is assuming they will even make the jump. I know some people have done registry hacks to get aircraft that only have installers for earlier versions into P3D5 so whether that would work, I don't know, but I don't have too much time to go playing with that.

There is clearly a performance hit with P3D V6 over v5, so I don't want to overstress it even more with scenery: time for a new PC for me I think!

I haven't been able to get Orbx to work either, along with almost all of my other v5 scenery addons. I seriously doubt if they ever will. I'm also going to have new machine built as soon as Samsung releases an NVME that's compatible with PCI express Gen 5.

If you have installed ORBX component in ORBX library should be enough to put the library entries in the scenery.cfg. In my case this seems to be OK.

I did a full install and that lasted 2 days as Adam instructed based on his Youtube video uninstalling v5.4 and installing v6 with all add-ons with the technique he used. it actually worked but there were too many bugs for my liken. I installed all my Orbx and Flightbeam Airports and did a flight from KSFO-KSAN without issues. There visual issues in the San Francisco area with the coastline beaches had land instead of water. Uninstalling True Earth Northern California and FTX Northern California fix that issue. I must say everything worked but the minor issues stayed in my head.
Oh well, I'm retired anyway with plenty of time on my hands. I spent today reinstalling 5.4 with everything up and running. I got impatient and couldn't help myself...

Performance on 6 is really good I can't wait until all the updates happen..

They've released an update, but I can't say if it will fix any issues you are seeing.

I found this on the Orbx forums and it works, at least for me, and it was pretty simple:
1: In C:\ProgramData\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v6, open the add-ons.cfg in Notepad. Also open the same file for P3D v5. Copy all your Orbx entries from the v5 file and paste them into the v6 file. Now fix the numbering so that it is sequential. All this does is point v6 to the location of your Orbx scenery entries.

Alternatively, you can simply replace the v6 add-ons.cfg file with a copy of the file for v5. This will enable all the addons in v6 that were in the v5 file. Some may work, some may not, or perhaps some may be incompatible and might crash the sim. So go slow if you have a huge number of addons.

2: in the same location, make a copy of the existing terrain.cfg (306 kb, then replace the original with the same file from P3D v5. The size should be 905 kb.

That’s it. Your v5 installs should all continue to work properly.

My guess is that there will be issues with some Orbx products in v6, however I can tell you that Orbx PNW and all of the Orbx seaplane bases as well as the PNW ferries, and even the wave effects all look very nice in v6, and without issues, at least as of the last beta which I think is identical to the release version. The FSX Beaver works too, as well as the Milviz Turbo Otter with the exception of the GPS and a funny window tint as I remember.
