P3D does not start after Win10 KB4515384 update

Postby richbonneau » Wed Sep 11, 2019 11:43 am

Last night I installed the new Windows 10 KB4515384 update and P3D no longer starts starts. I get the splash screen for several seconds then the app terminates with no error message.

I rebooted the PC and tried again to no avail.

Uninstalling the Windows update solves the problem and P3D runs normally.

I tried a reinstall of the update and the problem persisted so I ended up removing it until there's a solution.

Has anyone else run into this yet?

I had the same experience. Just uninstall the update and moved on.

I've seen this update mess with one's audio and in another case rebooting the computer allowed P3D to start, and cases where that didn't help. Already seeing reports of problems with HID devices too. What a mess.

I experienced the same issue today. This is what showed in event viewer (windows 10) when I started P3D V4.5.

Uninstalling the update fixed the issue. I have updates turned off and will keep them off until there is a fix.

Same problem, I posted here a few days ago https://www.prepar3d.com/forum/viewtopi ... 2&t=134851
but no solution. I spoke to Microsoft second support who told me to reformat PC which I did but I did not install the update until it was forced as a different update just now. I will uninstall until and pause updates until a fix is provided.

Installed yesterday. All seems to be fine.
Perhaps I'm just fortunate this time.

Ian, you're not alone. Mine runs fine too, and I have never had an issue with P3D (and FSX) having an issue with Windows Updates.

I too ran into the same crashing problem this evening too. I can't say whether it was due to the update or not however.

According to Event Viewer P3D was failing due to D3D9.dll. I had a look at system restore and, lo and behold, my PC had installed something to do with DirectX last night. I did a restore to before this happened and P3D started working again.

I then undid the restore just to experiment and...P3D still worked for some reason.

I then uninstalled KB4515384 and...P3D stopped working. :S

I then system restored back to before I did any of the above and, touch wood, it's working again. For some reason my Captain Sim aircraft were causing crashing on loading a flight. A reinstall of those aircraft fixed that.

So it's strange that I've restored back to square one and it's now working fine. I have no idea what caused the crashes in the first place. For all I know it won't work tomorrow morning!

It's not a P3d4-specific issue. It impacts a variety of apps, but the problem is not universal to all Windows 10 installations. The best guess at the moment is that the issue is related to an incomplete installation of the 10 September OS updates. Make sure that if you uninstall the two KB updates that you also postpone Windows from installing updates for seven days (the maximum time period allowed). Else, they will just reinstall the next time you boot up.

if you installed with an antivirus active , that may be the problem, I use Win Defender and had no problems...

Nope, only Defender here and the same problems. I used the latest restore point and am on a 7-days halt for now. How can we make sure sure MS is aware of the problem? They are aware of some issues, but i'm not sure P3D will be on their list. It doesn't affect all users apparently, so it might be difficult to solve. Btw there's a thread on AVSIM in the P3D Forum as well...
