NEW NVDIA DRIVER WORKS GREAT IN P3D

Post by shermank »

Nvidia made it a point to announce that its latest driver will be fine for the new MSFS 2020. But, for those of us sticking with P3D, I am here to tell you it makes a vast improvement for our platform, too. At least that is my experience, and as people who follow this forum and may recognize my name may recall, I have had my driver issues!

But, not anymore. Here is the link to the driver. I suggest you install and give it a whirl. For me, the visual impression and performance were immediately evident.

Yes. It seems to make P3D V5 more smooth, even with VR a also thought I have better smoothnes.

@ shermank ,

What was your last Nvidia driver?
What problem did you have with it?
Which P3Dxxx version are you using?
Do you have a comparing screenshot for that Nvidia driver?

I'd be interested to hear how it improves P3d?
I did install the latest driver at the same time I installed MSFS (tested that for 2 days and have come back to P3d)

I don't notice any difference? I am running P3d v4.5HF3, over a View Group, consisting of four non G sync monitors? What difference should I see? The frame rate is the same as before?

Maybe it was a placebo effect. I did not see any difference at all either.

I didn't notice any improvement as fare as frame rates or the few stutters i get on the ground when taxiing, but i did mark a slight improvement in textures and details changing, as got closer to them, or trees popping up at low altitudes.

My pevious drive was the Nvidia 760.
Most of the problems involved the dxgl error
I fly P3D 4.5 with the latest HF

Here is a screenshot with the 760 which was fine, except when it wasn't...:-)

"My pevious drive was the Nvidia 760."
What does that mean?

What is your screenshot showing?

I found it quite interesting that Nvidia released a new driver immediately after MSFS2020’s release. Nvidia even pointed out the driver’s support for the flight simulator. I’ve never seen that before!
When LM released P3Dv5 I was surprised to see an Nvidia Logo on the P3D startup screen. I thought perhaps Nvidia was working with LM and was FINALLY going to start including optimization for flight simulation in their drivers.
Well I guess it took a heavy hitter like MS to get Nvidia on board. LM wasn’t enough!
Hopefully MS’s reentry into flight simulation will be beneficial to Nvidia’s future driver designs.
Surprising though that MS, the creator of DirectX, chose to use DX11 for their “visually stunning” sim versus DX12 like LM has done!

@ wrap23 ,

Have you purchase P3Dv5?

Yes I have v5. I anxiously awaited it and bought it right away. I’m using an i9900k and 1080ti. I’m very pleased with the improvements v5 brought in the graphics area compared to v4. I didn’t notice any additional difference when I updated to the latest Nvidia driver. My biggest issue with P3D is autoGen popping and watching terrain being “drawn” in front of me. I really hope this can be fixed in the future. I have a HUGE investment in this platform!

Wrap23,

Under [TERRAIN] in your Prepar3d.cfg file, what is your LOD_RADIUS set to?

The default is 4.5, setting it to for instance 6.5 should do something about the drawing of terrain in front of you, but that will also increase your VRAM usage.

Hello Jorgen,
Sorry you had to ask. I should have responded. My apologies. Yes there is an improvement and my 1080ti handles the increase just fine.
Thank you very much for the suggestion and your interest in the outcome!
Happy Flying,
Don
