Texture: Ocean Wave

Post by miraclemax »

The apparent size of the wave representation as seen from cruise altitude, e.g. FL370, is unrealistically large. This same effect is seen on rivers when sunlight hits them at certain angles. IMHO this destroys the 'immersion'. Sliding water adjustment all the way down eliminates the huge textures and makes the ocean featureless, which actually looks better.

This has been a problem starting with FSX .

Max,

Which P3D version are you currently using?
Do you have some screenshots or a video of the problem?

It hardly requires a screenshot to illustrate the oversized waves and ocean swell in P3d 4.5 and v5. Just look at any section of any ocean, or any inland river or lake from about 5000 ft altitude. A 30 ft swell on every lake and river in calm conditions is not very realistic. It's been commented on many times before.

The OP is right. Waves look like big ocean waves regardless if you fly high, low or over a river, sea, lake or ocean. Compared to ocean waves look the river or creek waves much to big. River does not shake up that much like a big ocean. This effect is indeed very unrealiatic and has to be improved. Waves that look the same size all over the globe regardless how big the water surface is is not representative anymoree.

H are some images of the waves where you can see that regardless the size of the water surface, waves are always oceanstyle big and also regardless of hight you are viewing from. Look at KMIA small river with way to oversized waves

We've replaced the ocean wave height textures in our sim with simple noise map textures that make the waves look a lot better in our setup, you can get our replacement ocean textures here: https://www.jetexsimulation.co.uk/full- ... d-download

Will these textures work in version 5.4?

Here is a screenshot with your replacement ocean textures. This is of the coast of Northern California at about 10:30 am on March 23rd at 1500 feet altitude headed north. This is with the high texture setting. I did not see much difference regardless of the setting. A bit too calm for my taste. Plus occasional flashes from the textures not loading quick enough. I agree with you that the stock ocean textures are too large. What I would like to see is a basic flat texture that had a greenish tint for inland flying. Maybe the low setting could be inland water with a bit of a wavy texture then the medium, high, and ultra setting being for increasingly larger more stormy waves. I also tried an alternate set of water textures from SimMarket, they looked somewhat better in P3D5 but in P3D6 for some reason they suffer from glitches that look unrealism. So ocean textures are an ongoing problem looking for a solution.

I have been flying at least one or two flights everyday with the replacement textures. The textures look about right for inland flying and I have not had any further problem with texture flashing. I still think the replacement textures are too small for ocean waves. I have tried using some of the original textures with some of the replacement textures to get slightly bigger ocean waves, but that does not work very well. It creates strange artifacts in the appearance of ocean water. I am keeping the replacement textures but doing some more experimenting in the meantime.

The apparent size of the wave representation at high altitudes, like FL370, appears unnaturally large, akin to the effect observed on rivers under specific sunlight angles. In my opinion, this detracts from the overall immersion. Adjusting the water settings to their minimum removes the oversized textures, resulting in a smoother ocean appearance, which enhances the visuals. pikashow
