Low GPU and CPU usage with low FPS

Post by clement78 »

Hi everyone,
Since 1 month I upgrade my GTX 960 4GB to an RTX 2060 SUPER, I was exceeded of poor performances, but since I upgrade I can't see so much differences.
Moreover my CPU and GPU usage in game are very poor (around 30 to 40%).
With plane such as FSLABS A320 on airport like Paris Orly airport I barely reach 15fps... even with low settings.
My specs are :
AMD RYZEN 5 1600 3.2GHZ
MSI B350M BAZOOKA
16GB RAM 3200 MHZ
KFA2 RTX2060 SUPER
Here's an example of my task manager with PREPAR3D open : https://ibb.co/C2KG0SM
I would like to easily reach 25 to 30fps in the worst case if possible.
I'm running on PREPAR3D V4.5
(dismiss my English level I'm French)
Thank you

Your CPU is the problem, at 3.2 GHz it does not feed data quickly enough to the GPU to make any difference.

You need a CPU clock rate of over 4 GHz or higher.

Definitely CPU bound. You should be off the fps scale with low/medium settings with a 2060.

I had same issue with my stock i7 4930k @ 3.4Ghz struggling to keep up with 2 x GTX Titan Blacks in SLI and was barely getting 5-10 fps on low settings with triple 27" monitors @ 1080p.

Since overclocking the i7 to 4.5GHz, also allowing me to overclock the two sli Titan Blacks, I am getting 25-30fps on decent medium settings with ORBX scenery/UK2000 airports and UTL2 at now 7680 x 1440 resolution across the 3 monitors. Well pleased at no cost!

Lesson is dont always assume that you need to spend mega money on a top end graphics card to get decent acceptable frame rates. Just need to deal with the restrictions.

Hello,
Sorry for this late answer, do you think if I take a Ryzen 5 3600X with 3.8 ghz it will solve the problem, or it's better to take an Intel Core i5-7600K (3.8 GHz).
Thank you

Get the Intel. Update the BIOS on the motherboard to the latest, then overclock the CPU.

The performance will not be the same if I take a Ryzen?
Will I get very good FPS with full settings in very dense area?

Intel CPUs are more efficient in the number of instructions they handle per clock cycle, therefore they are the choice for simulations.

You do not need to "chase FPS", as your eye cannot see more than 25-30 FPS anyway. Instead, you need to aim for smoothness - as in real life.

And there's no computer yet made that will run with "all sliders to the right" in a dense area... no one can guarantee what performance you will get, it depends so much on your settings, and those interact....

Thank you for your advice.
I think I will go for the Intel Core i5-9600KF (3.7 GHz) and I will OC it.

Don't forget you will need a new motherboard going to Intel.
Gigabyte x670 Aorus Elite AX MB; 7800X3D CPU; Deepcool LT520 Cooler; 64 Gb G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO DDR5; Win11 Pro; 1 Samsung 990 2Tb NVMe SSD: 1 Crucial 4Tb MX500 SSD; 1 Samsung 860 1Tb SSD; Gigabyte 1080ti 11Gb VRAM; Toshiba 43" LED TV @ 4k..

Hi clement78,
dont listen to the nonsense these guys talking. Your issue has another reason.

You both even understand the question ??

Why should he listen to you, who makes his first post on this board, and offers no arguments whatsoever for his opinionated statement?

it's certainly up to him.
now he has a opposite opinion - not to buy a new CPU. Because a "low cpu usage" isnt a sign for a CPU bottleneck.

Yes, a second opinion is all he has, without any arguments whatsoever to back that opinion up.

Just came to this post, verified that Jorgen was here (always helpful) and saw that it would be better to run a CPU ovc to 4.0GHz to make things good for P3Dv4.
I'm upgrading my system and it will have an ASUS PRIME X299 DELUXE + INTEL I9-10940X (14 cores @ 3.30GHz) + GALAX RTX 2080TI + 128GB DDR4 3000 CORSAIR.
Is there a link to learn how to OVC this to run @ 4.00GHz? And the same goes to GPU?
Tks

Here's the ting: the number of cores does not mean all that much, the clock rate of the CPU does.

The clock rate should be a base (sustained) clock rate, forget about the turbo or boost rates.

Take a good look at the I7-9700K - that one seems to be what several people here go for, and of course a suitable motherboard. If memory serves me right, someone had that one overclocked to 5 GHz, with only air cooling.
