DIS Radios functional?

Postby dgadomski » Tue Feb 11, 2020 7:10 pm

Are the DIS Radios functional?

We have been working on an application that utilized DIS Interface. The assumption has been that the DIS Radios are functional as Prepar3d has been sending Transmitter PDUs. When we got to the point where we are beginning to implement the Comms, it doesn't appear that the DIS radios are even functional.

To test, we have tried assigning both COM1 radio (transmit) and COM2 radio (transmit) to a joystick button. When pressing the assigned button, there is no change in state of the Transmit PDU coming out of Prepar3d.

Before pursuing this any further, can you please confirm that DIS Radios are even functional in Prepar3d?

Hi dgadomski,

The Transmitter PDUs you are seeing are likely from navigation aids rather than radios.

There is limited radio support for DIS. Radios are triggered using the same key events as multiplayer. These events can be assigned to a keyboard or joystick using the controls UI. If you search for "voice" you should find "Transmit voice" and "Transmit voice to all" events.

There also key events that can be used programmatically (see the Multiplayer section of the Event IDs article in the Learning Center).

When using the "Transmit voice" events, PDUs should be broadcast using the user's active COM radio frequency. When using the "Transmit voice to all" events, PDUs should be broadcast using the intercom values assigned in the DIS user interface.

Prepar3D only supports specific audio formats at the moment. See the list in the "Supported Audio Formats" section of the DIS article in the Learning Center.

Clifton,

Thanks for the quick reply. In looking at the frequencies that are being transmitted, the first radio frequency is matching the COM1 frequency, the frequency for the second radio is 1 which would be an intercom freq.

If I'm going to have to use a different solution to accomplish comms, it's probably not a good idea to be transmitting these out unless you are just using it to receive the radio signal. Of course, this may be problematic with the limited number of formats supported as the most common that I've experienced is mu-law.
