So I'm thinking about buying some new hardware specially for p3d.
As i haven't followed the hardware discussions for quite some time now I wonder which parts would be best to put in a new rig.

I need:

- Processor
- GPU
- Mainboard
- RAM

I as of late got some information about whether I ought to get Prepar3d. I was overwhelmed by the positive criticism it gets, yet in addition that I would require a greatly improved PC. Along these lines, quelle shock, I'm getting some information about the specs that you folks suggest. I'd prefer to know:

What processor: likely which i7?

What designs card?

The amount RAM?

In particular, (this is the touch I generally battle with) would you be able to suggest a particular motherboard?

The simple answer is: The best PC you can afford.

P3d will continue to use all your hardware resources, particularly if you have all the sliders over to the right, requesting the highest quality detail, out to the horizon. As you do so, your frame rates will go down. If you don't have a fast machine (remember, most of the work is done on Core 0 in P3d) frames will suffer.

Your preferred GPU depends on what you are driving. If you have one 1920x1080 60hz screen, any basic 1Gb card will do. As you go up in screen resolution (ie 4K) and multiple monitors (4K x 2 etc), and higher refresh rates (eg. 144hz), you need to get a better card. To future proof your system (out to three years) it might be best to get a card slightly better than you require now. In the future, you may need more VRAM on board. Now that there are two main GPU manufacturers so you are going to get more personal choices on this forum.

The amount of RAM you need, depends again on the quantity of scenery you are loading at any one time (eg. angle of view), at what resolution, and at what frame rate. It is relatively cheap so I think most people would say minimum 16Gb even if it normally does not go higher than 6GB.

When you start adding complex add-on aircraft to your liking, plus add-on scenery, and accessories, weather programs etc., everyone's system is going to be different and you are going to get different suggestions. The idea is to reduce bottle necks from start to finish. Even in the best system, the owner will be looking how to open up the flow of data.

Sorry, not so. With P3D v. 4, you need at least a 2 GB card, with v. 5 at least a 4 GB card. And those are the absolute minimums.

In practice, you need much more VRAM, and especially as you add more add-ons. Even with the screen resolution as you mention and 4 GB VRAM, I run out of VRAM more often than I care about. And my settings are nothing to write home about.... ;-)

You are quite correct. In my defense, I have been using quite a few versions of P3d (way back in V3, V4.0 days). I found that every time a new version came out, I was replacing and updating either my GPU, or motherboard and CPU, or building another PC. With P3d V4.0 you did start to need a 2GB card. Now 8GB is fairly normal.

(My current card is a RTX 2070 Super with 8GB and I am starting to feel inadequate :-) I retired a GTX1070 earlier this year. )
