Prepar3dV causes my RX590 graphics card to hang when selecting poor weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow. Running latest available versions:
Prepar3D 5.0.31.35253
Windows 10 build 1909
Radeon driver 20.71
CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8-Core processor
Ram 16GB
Graphics card RX590 8Gb VRAM
As a rule the time card takes to hang varies from seconds to 15 mins of selecting one of the pre-set weather conditions. As a test I just tried a flight using standard Prepar3D settings on an F22 at Randolph AFB using the Stormy Weather preset. Time to graphics card hanging < 10 seconds.
Thanks,
Ken Rennoldson

Re: RX590 repeatedly hanging
Ken,
This should be fixed when you update your Windows 10 to v. 2004, and also update your graphics card drivers.

Re: RX590 repeatedly hanging
Thanks Jorgen, the Win 10 2004 update isn't available for my PC yet so I guess I shall have to stick to sunny weather until then!
Re: RX590 repeatedly hanging
Ken,
"Prepar3dV causes my RX590 graphics card to hang"
How long does the hang last?
Does the screen and flight actually stop responding during the hang?

Best to wait (IMO) for Windows to offer the update to you and then do it.

Re: RX590 repeatedly hanging
It effectively crashes Prepar3D so the only way to recover is to restart it, or sometimes, reboot the PC.

To try to isolate what is causing the CTD
Look in the Windows Event Viewer and get the
Faulting Module Name

Re: RX590 repeatedly hanging
Thanks for the pointer but I am unable to alter the Hardware Acceleration on my PC. There isn't a Troubleshooting tab in the Display - Advanced Settings. I'm on a later version of the driver (20.71) than mentioned in the post.

Re: RX590 repeatedly hanging
I confess I hadn't seen the comments. Used the AMD tool to uninstall the drivers and reverted to the AMD recommended version of 20.4.2.
No difference. I have flagged it separately to AMD and will see if there is a response.
For what it's worth in AMD I have selected that standard 'Gaming' profile
Opinions folks - is XPlane more stable? I'll wait for Win 10 2004 but am considering jumping ship if that doesn't improve things - or Lockheed Martin don't acknowledge this as a bug on their backlog to fix. But in the meantime thanks for all the help!

Re: RX590 repeatedly hanging
The bug here is DX12, to be taken care of by Microsoft, v. 2004 is part of that.
