Long stutters (pauses) in VR

Post by Airtrooper »

I have been away from simming for a few months (when I believe I was using v4.4). I'm back, having built a new higher spec PC and reinstalled a vanilla P3D v4.5.13.32097. I'm using an Oculus Rift CV1. Without VR I get >100 FPS. Inside VR I get >60 FPS. However, I'm now suffering from periodic (frequent!) periods of 0 FPS, i.e. long stutters/pauses. It persists even when I lower sliders. This has never happened before and I have no idea why. Any help and advice would be very welcome please.

Below is a trace of my FPS from Razer Cortex (starts with no VR, then VR, then no VR again). I have very stable ~120 FPS until I go into VR at which point it drops (as would be expected), becomes less stable and also pauses.

Many thanks

Andy

You need to first make P3D work with no stuttering before you put VR into play.

To do that, go here: https://www.prepar3d.com/SDKv4/prepar3d ... ation.html

and apply the setting as appropriate to your particular system.

In particular, pay attention to the frame rate limiter, and set it to 30. That will give your processor the time it needs to build the frames before the GPU tries to put them on the screen. Your eye cannot see more than 25-30 FPS anyway.

Now, when this works to your satisfaction, without VR, then is the time to experiment with VR.

Many thanks for your reply, but I don't have stutters when outside of VR. As I wrote in my original post I have ~120 FPS and it is very smooth.

In Prepar3D.cfg, try to set UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT to 30, then try again.

If you're not happy with the results, you can always change that value back to what it was.

I'm still suffering from the same issue (now in v5) with or without a 30 FPS limit imposed.

Any help would be most welcome! :-)
