Unexpected Low Perfomance

Post by VTerry22 »

Hi all, long time FSX, X-Plane user finally deciding to move to P3D.

Bought a new rig about a year ago, specs are as follows.

i9-10900K
RTX3080
32GB RAM

Would have thought it could handle P3D v5, fresh install and first startup but struggling to sustain over 10-20fps. Sliders are not set to max yet still seems to be underperforming. I can get 60+ frames in the new microsoft sim on max settings but can’t scratch anywhere near that in P3D.

Would love to use PMDG and ORBX but remembering how much it hit performance in fsx is making me think I won’t have much improvement.

Any other users have similar issues and find fixes or have I done something substantially wrong.

Thanks

First of all, your CPU's clock rate - the number of cores is not that important, but the clock rate is.

You should overclock this, at least to over 4 GHz, if possible to over 4.5 GHz.

Then, go here:

https://www.prepar3d.com/SDKv4/prepar3d ... ation.html

and here:

https://simmershome.de/prepare3d-v5-einstellungen/

The last site is in German, but there is an English-language option.

For calculating the value for AffinityMask, use this calculator:

https://www.gfsg.co.uk/affinitymask.asp ... m=utilties

All this will adapt and adjust P3D better to your particular system.

@ VTerry22 ,
I have an i9-9900k 3.6GHz / 5 Ghz Turbo and it runs P3D just fine.

No need to overclock my CPU as it goes Turbo 5 GHz with P3D.

Your CPU has a turbo higher than 5GHZ so it is ok as is.

Start P3D default flight / scenery (no AI Traffic or weather program etc.) to check your FPS and bring up the Task Manager to check your CPU speed?

Note for my setup:
i9-9900k
RTX2080Ti 11GB
32GB memory
PMDG, ORBX, Xplane11, MSFS [2020] and many payware scenery products.

Check on your hyperthreading configuration and change it. If its enabled turn it off. If its disabled turn it on. Then see what happens. I went from hyperthreading on to off and received a big performance boost.

RTX 3090 FTW

Runs at 4.9/5.0 with P3D open at EGLC.

It was enabled. Turned it off and got a small performance boost, nothing substantial though. Thanks for the tip!

You are ok, doing good.
At the default flight and airport you may be over 5 MHz (better than my set up).

What was your FPS at EGLC?

Note:
I have Hyperthreading On.

@ VTerry22 ,

Overclocking information:

Before Overclocking (voiding your warranty / burning up the CPU) read this:

Overclocking information link was originally posted by Jim Harnes here:

@ VTerry22 ,

Need to know what your performance is (FPS ect.) with the P3D default flight running?

@ VTerry22 ,

No follow up?
You posted in the hardware section so possibly you suspect a hardware issue in your setup?
Do you have a home cockpit, using multiple PCs or a home built PC?

The General Debugging (linked below) are an excellent starting point for problem resolution and they will provide a report for the forum members watching this problem and for LM staff to review:

Apologies, I am busy with work.
What was your FPS at EGLC?
I got around 35-45 PMDG 737 with ORBX UK addon. No EGLC custom.

VTerry22 ,

That sounds about right.
What were you expecting to get with PMDG?

Did you use any of PMDG's performance improvement Options (via PMDG CDU)?

I lock my FPS at 29 and I get 29 with PMDG.

But, I wanted to know is what you get with the default flight (F-35A at KRND) without AI traffic or weather program or any other Add-on running?

Not sure. I have a home built PC, pre-built for me but added some extra bits (RAM etc) from me.

recently reset pc

Ok, that is where I figured the problem could be.

You have a custom setup.
And, not full information provided on your complete SIM setup hardware and software.

Is your 50 - 60 with the default flight?

I will do a quick test right now to see what I get with PMDG .

Yes. F35 at the default airport. Clear skies, no traffic. Framerate is limited to 60.
