Error msg and then immediate CTD of P3D

Post by Greg Goodavish »

Hello, I bought P3DV4 in Jan 2020, and have been using it ever since with absolutely no problems. I did update to V4.5 as well. I do have a ton of scenery and aircraft addons I use, and have not had any issues. However, yesterday, I started getting this error when trying to start P3D:

" This device (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super) stopped working for the following reason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG" It then crashes to desktop. The only things that have changed in the last two days is ORBX Manager updated (scenery addon), and my NVIDIA graphics drivers updated. Thinking that might be the problem, I rolled back to my former drivers, and it still gives me that error. My NVIDIA driver number now is 27.21.14.6089. The thing is, every other program works on my computer, including DCS combat flight simulator, with no problems. Only P3D is affected. I then deleted all of my ORBX addon scenery and its manager, thinking maybe that caused it. I still get the same error. I did restart my computer after I did these things, and still get the error and CTD.

I then deleted all of my addons (every last one), and also deleted P3DV4.5, using the Windows uninstall features, and then manually deleted the six files you mention on your forum to do a clean uninstall. I also updated Windows 10. I then restarted my computer. I shut off my virus program and reinstalled the latest version of P3DV4.5, version number 4.5.14.34698. I then restarted my computer. I tried to start P3DV4.5 and got the same message and CTD. I am at a loss, and hope you can help me. I love this program and want to continue using it.

Here are my specs:

Intel i9.9900 @3.10GHZ CPU
Installed memory: 32 GB
dual NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super graphics cards, with SLi
Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit, OS build 1904.928

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

@ Greg Goodavish ,

I have specs like yours but:

I do not have dual video cards / SLI like yours : dual NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super graphics cards, with SLI

I have RTX2080Ti 11GB

My WIN10 is 20H2 Build 19042.964

I am using Nvidia driver 466.27
With P3Dv4.5HF3

all ok on my setup.

Hi
Have you tried to change your setup options?
Have you tried to make a new prepar3D.cfg file (backup your actual file)?
Have you tried to restore your W10?

I set my NVIDIA Control panel to default settings. As I stated above, I uninstalled prepar3D V4.5 and reinstalled with the latest version, still having the issue. I did have Windows 10 scan and repair any of its files, and it said there was no issue. Direct X 12 also is good. As I said, it is only doing this with Prepar3D. I also run Digital Combat Simulator World, and it has very intense graphics, with no problem. So the issue is between Prepar3D and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super cards. Prepar3D staff, can you help?

Event Viewer :

To try to isolate what is causing the CTD
Look in the Windows Event Viewer and get the
Faulting Module Name

Try to google the exception code from the log, by typing this string into your favorite browser:

Exception code: 0xc00000fd

This is a "Stack overflow exception", a Windows error, and you will see several articles discussing that as a result of your search.

Since you already did the command that Michel suggested, then I would suggest to run Windows Update, and when you do make sure that in Update, under Advanced options, the switch "Receive updates for other Microsoft products" is set to On. Leave this switch on from now on, to ensure you always get the updates you need.

@ Greg Goodavish ,

The Windows Event Viewer error shows:
Faulting module name: TextShaping.dll

Look again in the event viewer log.
Scroll down the log entries.

Check each error entry in the log since the date of your first CTD several days ago.

Are they all showing the same Faulting module name: TextShaping.dll ?

I just tried starting it again, same result with the CTD. Here is that error log. In looking back, the offending module is either this one, or the textshaping.dll. :

I just uninstalled prepar3D and reinstalled again, following procedures shown in this forum. followed all suggestions regarding virus scanners, UAC, windows defender (shut them all off). I also rebooted after uninstall and also new install. Now when I try to start P3D, I am getting two errors. Here are the event logs:

Hi
1) Could you confirm you have fully deleted these 6 folders before the last new install of P3D?
Local Disk (C:) ► Program Files ► Lockheed Martin ► Prepar3D v4 (or the modified install location)
Documents ► Prepar3D v4 files
Documents ► Prepar3D v4 Add-ons
Local Disk (C:) ► ProgramData ► Lockheed Martin ► Prepar3D v4
Local Disk (C:) ► Users ► You ► AppData ► Roaming ► Lockheed Martin ► Prepar3D v4
Local Disk (C:) ► Users ► You ► AppData ► Local ► Lockheed Martin ► Prepar3D v4
2) Could you confirm your documents folder is at the default location and not at your own location?
