CTD when calling for ATC or GSX window in Prepar3d v5.3

Post by Bram63 »

Hi everyone,

I installed today V5.3 by uninstalling the complete sim and using the full installer. I always leave my addons in place. This has worked in the past with every update.
No problems encountered during the update process, however after launching the sim and sitting in an airplane, when I want to pop up the ATC window (default keypress), the sim crashes to desktop, or when I call for GSX services (CTRL+F12) the same CTD happens.
After the keypress , a black child window with no text in it (Be it ATC or GS services) appears for a few seconds and then the sim crashes (CTD)
There were no problems with V5.2.22.17625
I also have V4 installed and no problems there

I did notice that the simconnect version got upgraded from V5.2.00 to V5.3.00

What I tried already:
-Start the sim as admin --> no change
-Disabled all addons --> no change
-Ran FSDT Live update --> no change
ATIS information is read back and shown in the sim correctly
The windows event log consistantly points with every crash to:
Faulting application path: D:\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v5\Prepar3D.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office16\mso20win32client.dll

I am on Windows 11 B22000.348 and keep the OS up to date through windows update

Any help on how to further troubleshoot and of course find a solution, is greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

John

Hi John,

Are you seeing this in the default scenario or at certain locations or in certain vehicles? You mentioned disabling add-ons, have you tried with a completely clean installation?

Hi Rob,

thanks for quick reply.
Yes I tried the default scenario, different default and addon planes, and also different airport locations.
The CTD is 100% reproducable. Without popping up ATC window or GSX ground services the sim is fine.
No, I do not like to go for a clean install (Additional manually removing all files within those 5 folders as per accompanied install/reinstall instructions)

Within the child window , be it ATC or GSX services, there should appear some text. Instead there is only a black background and e few seconds later the sim CTD.
Maybe some issues with fonts?

I really want ATC and GSX services back, so I will give this clean install a go. It 'll take some time, but I will report back

Thanks for your quick response

Here is an update :-)

Doing a clean install did the trick.
I removed all addon AC, sceneries, tools and finally uninstalled the complete sim, incl removing those extra folders as per instruction.

ATC windows is back up and running. No CTD`s anymore.
I "ll gradually reinstall all addons and keep an eye on this issue.
I do not expect problems anymore, however if this issue reappears I "ll report back here.

I cannot give an answer as to what happened, but will keep this advice "Clean install" in mind for future updates

Thanks for your time

Johan

First I uninstalled v5.2 as instructed through Control Panel. Installed v5.3 into the folder that it wanted to i.e.program files/lockheed martin/5.3 or whatever. I opened p3d as administrator, as I always do, and just proceeded as I normally do with v5.2 selecting my default aircraft. All loaded ok but click on ATC ( which would normally open on loading) CTD.
Next I installed v5.3 on a NEW drive, no addons, no scenery just all the default 5.3 info, opened up the A2A cessna, which loaded OK, click on ATC and CTD.

I have since re installed 5.2 and all is working as it was. I am thinking like " if it aint broke why fix it " ??????

When you have those CTDs, what do you then have in your Windows Event Viewer?

To rodders1947,

from what I read in your post it is not clear, whether you did a complete clean install. Uninstalling the sim through windows control panel is not enough. And then redirecting the installer to a folder that does not exist is not enough either for a clean install. You have to manually delete additional folders.
How the installer deals with such a scenario (Leaving those additional folders intact), I cannot tell.
In your account LM provides a file with clear instructions which folders are affected/to be deleted for a clean install.
Again, when I read your post, you did not delete them?

As I fly leonardo`s maddog and they released a patch that adapts their plane for P3Dv5.3 ...
I always update to the latest, even when a previous version works, no matter what

Just my 2 cents, hope you get it sorted out

OK so I have deleted ALL of the files as advised by LM and removed any evidence of P3D from my C drive. Reinstalled P3D v5.3 , click on the mooney A/C just to try it out , all loaded ok, click on ATC, Black ATC window and P3D CRASHED. What the hell am I doing wrong ????
Just checked ORBX files , all seem OK so I loaded P3D v5.3 and let it use the default F35 A/C I did nothing else but click on ATC, a small black window appeared and CTD.

My system is i9-11900 K , RTX 2070, 32 gb ddr4 3000 ram and 3 1gb ssd drives. P3D v5.2 was excellent with 40-45 fps and NO problems whatsover.....

@ rodders1947 ,

Any problems with the PC or flight sim setups in the past 6 months?

ATC window should not remain black and you should not CTD.

Add-ons in use?

Did you uninstall Add-ons before installing P3Dv5.3?

To try to isolate what is causing the problem or e.g., a CTD
Look in the Windows Event Viewer and get the
Faulting Module Name

Hi martyson,

My Pc specs are :- i9-11900 k , Z590 M/B, 32 gb ddr4 3000 ram , RTX2070 vid card, 3 x 1tb ssd drives

The report is :- The program Prepar3d.exe version 5.3.12.28072 stopped interacting with windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the security and maintenance control panel. All I can find relative in this control panel is that Microsoft Direct x Diagnostic tool stopped at the exact same time as p3d........................

@ rodders1947 ,

You posted into this thread [CTD when calling for ATC or GSX window in Prepar3d v5.3] with:
"I have since re installed 5.2 and all is working as it was. I am thinking like " if it aint broke why fix it " ??????"

Do you have a full default P3Dv5.3 install now without Add-ons?

yes I installed 5.3 without any addons, same problem of atc crashing the P3D prog.
I have uninstalled everything that was stated in the P3d uninstall/install PDF and reinstalled 5.3 and all of my a/c FSUIPC etc. The program works fine, good FPS like 5.2 etc absolutely nothing to complain about EXCEPT when I try to open ATC I get a small black box and CTD.

Well, my guess here is that he did remove V5.2 completely and deleted those additional folders.
He had a clean install of V5.3 and still CTD
He then went farther by installing his addons again and still CTD
He, however seems unfamiliar with windows event viewer

To rodders1947

At some point you had the same situation as me (Clean install of V5.3)
The only difference I see there is that I installed the flightsim outside windows system folders and stay away from my C-drive for installation destinations. A habit from earlier times...

If you want to start the windows event viewer, just type in the words `event viewer` in the search box (Next to your start-buttom

There is always the possibility of manually tuning atc frequencies... adds to the workload in the cockpit :-)

@ rodders1947 ,

Can you do a couple screenshots (or video) of your P3Dv5.3 SimObjects/Airplanes folder showing all that is installed?
e.g., : D:\Prepar3D v5\SimObjects\Airplanes
