Enhanced Atmospherics inaccuracies - a more technical look

Post by BiologicalNanobot »

Hi,

Do you have plans to improve Enhanced Atmospherics? There are several inaccuracies, especially with sunset/sunrise conditions, some of which was not the case with P3D v5.0 HF2.

  • Since v5.1, effect of ozone seems to be a lot less significant, causing inaccurate rendition of sky.
  • Similarly since v5.1, sun light seems to be no longer obstructed by the Earth, causing clouds to have a bright orange glow during sunset/sunrise.
  • Visibility layers seem to lack a phase function, which might cause them to look overly uniform. With a quick search on the internet, I found this image, it demonstrates this issue really well:

  • Clouds do not follow the Earth's curvature, which means probably a ray-AABB intersection function is used to determine volume boundaries instead of cocentric spheres.
  • Cloud detail can be greatly improved with fragment skipping and temporal reprojection, which is called amortization in trueSKY SDK.

Here are a few screenshots from v5.0 HF2, showing the differences between v5.1 HF1, if it helps:

Thanks in advance.
