Very low FPS - P3Dv5 unusable..

Post by PanthersGB »

I'm hoping you can help please.

I purchased the latest Academic version of P3Dv5 just over six weeks ago and have been so happy with it to the point that I recently uninstalled P3D v 4.

However, suddenly I have experienced a significant drop in FPS to the point where the sim is unusable. (FPS of between 3 and 30 frames, mainly in single figures) I have followed, very closely, the re-install instructions and when relaunching the sim with minimum graphic settings, default F35A aircraft and no add-ons installed, the issue remains. I have tried reinstalling a couple of times...

Info as follows

P3Dv5 v5.0.31.35253

Windows 10 v2004

No add ons installed

Intel i7-9700
16MB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, latest drivers installed.

No modifications to system

No crash logs or error messages displayed.

I have installed P3Dv5 on a separate drive as my "C Drive" has insufficient space.

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated and please let me know any further info required as this is my first post in this forum.

Many thanks,,

Simon

I assume you have not made any changes or 'tweaks' to the prepar3d.cfg.

Share you display settings. If you have FXAA enabled (it is by default) then turn it off and try that.

Hello Dan, I have disabled FXAA but no change in performance.

When the sim loads it seems to take three or four seconds for the scenery to load in.

I hope the screenshots below are helpful

Try turning off Dynamic Texture Streaming and Dynamic 3D Autogen Vegetation.

Do what Sky King said.

You can also try:

P3D V5. In display section:
1.- Enable Vsync.
2.- Set on Triple Buffering.
3.- Target frame rate: Unlimited.

On Nvidia Control Panel:
P3D V5:
Cuda -GPUs: Use global setting (All)
Max Frame Rate: 30 Fps
OpenGL rendering GPU: Geforce RTX 2070 Super
Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance
Shader Cache: Off
Threaded optimization: On
Triple buffering: On

In Configure Sorround, PhysX:
PhysX settings: Geforce RTX 2070 Super.

Regards.

Did you maybe tweak windows 10 recently? BCEdit commands? If so, return to previous state, either by system restore or the correct reverse commands. A reboot is also needed to make it work.

Many thanks to everyone for your help. I have made the suggested changes to P3D and NVIDIA and the issue remains.

I don't know if this observation helps but I notice a delay a approx 1 to 2 seconds for key presses to be recognised in the sim. E.g. When pressing Shift and Z to display the frame rate into etc. Would this indicate a CPU problem rather than GPU?

Dan, I'm afraid my computer knowledge is limited so rarely make any tweaks to software.

I'm not sure we are going to solve this one as I do appreciate that everyone's systems and set-ups are different. All my games and applications work fine so reluctant to reinstall Windows but that may be my only option......

RESOLVED

Hello all, I'm very pleased to advise that the issue has now been resolved. After a flash of inspiration (and re-reading the FAQs!) I have discovered the issue was caused by my Speedlink Black Widow joystick. I unplugged it and the frames have returned !!! :)

I have now re-installed the drivers for the joystick and plugged it back it and everything seems to be working fine once again. Will now spend the next few hours putting back all the Orbx and add ons !

Many thanks for the recommended settings for NVIDIA and for the sim which I will continue to use.

Best wishes

Simon

Was the Joystick in use for the past 6 weeks without a problem?

Hello Vaughan,

Yes the Joystick has been in use for the past 6 weeks without a problem so not sure why it started to cause an issue.

@ PanthersGB ,

That is a wonder item.

Is you Joystick going to the PC's USB port or a USB Hub?
