Mission Start Point

I am considering moving across to use Prepar3d.
Is it possible to create mission scenarios that commence airborne ?
If so how is the start point defined ?
Is it via Lat Long or can it be in the format of Place/Bearing/Distance and level ?

Yes you can, I typically set up my start position using SimDirector the mission editor for P3D. Here's a link to the SDK about mission creation.
