Composite Scenery

Post by NormanLGibson »

A friend of mine mentioned the description "composite" scenery which I think describes this scenery.

I have resampled 15m imagery (Terracolor NextGen) as a "full" blend mask at LOD13, thus giving a complete 'transparent' imagery layer and when placed above your landclass scenery produces a real scenery at higher altitudes and higher resolution at lower altitudes with the landclass showing through. I have ORBX AUv2 and my imagery scenery is placed above the ORBX layer as shown in the following video. The landclass scenery is not changed at all. I have the imagery mask above my airports, maybe I should have it below. Darwin looks good. I will be interested to try a large city.

I have produced the following video.

A few screenshots this time showing a comparison. All at 8,500ft.

ORBX AU2 - The upper Blend is not activated.

The composite.

The composite at night. Night lighting would be ORBX

A nice shot showing water masked from the imagery.

This video simulates a descent during an en-route flight. At around 7,000ft ORBX high resolution ORBX AU2 textures can be seen to bleed "through". This type of scenery is ideal for large areas where high resolution imagery is expensive. The scenery takes up much less HD space and is frame rate friendly leaving more pc power for your aircraft and detail around your points of departure and arrival.

When I first tried this type of scenery I tested three different tones for the grey mask but could not notice any difference. However when viewing the scenery in the tmf viewer I noticed that my tiles that have water masking were a different shade than the tiles that did not. Following investigation as to why they appeared different I realised that my "full" landmask was a different shade of grey (now that name sounds familiar) to that which I was using on my coastal tikes so I tried a coastal tile with the different shade of grey and it looks great at all altitudes.

The climb scenes over a coastal tile in the following video is with the same grey tone as the land tiles. This is looking very good. I can hardly notice any changes in the composite between lower altitude and whilst climbing. I tested with default underlying scenery but ORBX is superior as far as colour and landclass matching are in the 15m imagery.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEt_1QqJd8A&t=184s

Finally finished. Available from here https://www.gibsonsceneries.com/ including a link to a free demo and available soon from Simmarket.

A free upgrade for existing purchasers. If any person previously purchased from The Flightsim Store, if you want an upgrade you can send me an email with Proof of Purchase. My email is in the free demo pdf in the link above.

I have decided to release two LOD's. One is a full composite at LOD 13 which forms a composite over your full underlying Land Class Scenery and the other is a composite but at LOD 12 which will fully show your landclass below and around the aircraft. Both work nicely if you have ORBX AU2. I haven't tried AU1, however it should be good.
