Low FPS when undocking window to second screen

Post by nielsvi »

Hi all,

Since two days I experience a huge drop of FPS when undocking a window to my second screen (OpenCockpits FMC).
I did some research and stumbled upon some other topics, however none of the solutions work.
I tried disabling the 'in-game overlay', different settings in Nvidia settings game profile, however, no luck so far.

I have all the latest updates of drivers and Windows 10. Also running the latest version of Prepar3d V4 (4.2).
Prepar3d was running solid for almost a year now, no changes made te last time, except for a new Windows Update (the latest). Returning to the version before that one also made no difference.

All windows I undock (also the P3D default planes) to the second window cause the FPS to drop to almost below 10, where without an undocked window, or with an undocked window on my main screen, the FPS are around 40-50.

I hope someone can help me, cause this absolutely ruins the fun I have with my home cockpit.

Thanks for helping me.

Regards,

Niels

Hello Niels,

Do you have GPU overclocking/monitoring software?

Some user-found solutions can be found in the threads below, though these may be threads and suggestions you've already tried:

Hi Brady,

Thanks for the reply. I already tried the solutions offerde in those trends

I don’t use any GPU monitoring/overclocking software.

Hello,

Are both monitors plugged into the GPU? It's possible one might have been plugged into the motherboards graphics.

Did you add any new software to the computer before seeing this behavior?

Are you running another program while running Prepar3D?

Hi,

I have two GPU's:
- GTX 1070
- GTX 1050 TI

The main screen is connected to the 1070, my CDU to the 1050.
Connecting both to the 1070 seems to solve the problem, however, how is it possible
that 'out of the blue (?)' the 1050 causes stuttering, without changing anything?

Disabling the GeForce Experience In Game Overlay for shadowplay solved the issue for me.

Hi Niels,

I have also two GPUs (GTX1080, GT710) and undock mainpanel and the FMC screen to GT710
I experienced "Flickering" or "Black Flashing" screens after Windows 1803 update.

I enabled "VSync" and "Triple Buffering" in the settings and that fixed the problem. But Yesterday, when I undocked the FMC screen again, massive flickering / black flashing occurs.
I had to reduce the Target frame rate to 50 fps (was unlimited) to fix it.

Hi Herman, thanks for your reply. I tried enabling VSync and triple buffering, but no difference was seen. Still got the 10 fps when connecting the cdu to my second GPU.

I remember back in the FSX days that I encountered the same problem. Nothing could fix it then. I hope LM could investigate this problem further, because a lot of people are having the same problem and I think it's too easy to only blame other programs, drivers, etc.

Just wondering:
Have you tested undocking a panel from a default P3D aircraft to your second monitor?
