Might I suggest a solution to improve the quality and speed of foilage display within the sim's environment?

Has anyone seen or heard of SpeedTree? www.speedtree.com

No, it's actually rendering code as well to control the LOD and speed at which items are processed for rendering. I have seen it's significant performance increase in other games and can attest that it is far, far more than what you describe.

You're both more or less right. Speed tree is a very efficient system and could likely speed up our existing auto-gen rendering. For now though, our foliage is mostly comprised of billboard fans, so a complex LOD system isn't needed. We have a few GPU tricks in mind for how to handle them on our own. Speedtree would be a great way to improve the quality of our foliage while maintaining good performance, but we don't currently have any plans of using it.
